Winter around Rovaniemi splits between what you can reach on foot from town and what needs a car. Both are worthwhile, but they are different days, and daylight rather than distance is usually the limiting factor.

How to choose

If you only have a couple of hours: Ounasvaara's winter trail starts a short walk across the river from the centre and is groomed, so a couple of hours is enough.
For half a day: A half day suits Ounasvaara with time for a campfire at one of the lean-to shelters.
For a full day: Auttiköngäs or the Arctic Circle Hiking Area at Vaattunkiköngäs fill a day, including the drive each way.
Without a car: Ounasvaara is the only one of these you can reach without a car. The bus stop nearest Vaattunkiköngäs still leaves you a long walk on a gravel road.
With children: Ounasvaara's groomed winter trail and short distances from town are the most forgiving with children; the waterfall trail at Auttiköngäs is steep and exposed.

Spring: Snow lingers well into spring here; conditions can be icy underfoot.
Summer: The summer nature trails open once the snow is gone, roughly from May.
Autumn: Colour and firm ground before the first snow, with the café season ending in September.
Winter: Short daylight is the real constraint - carry a headtorch and start early.

Comparing the options

Ounasvaara wins on logistics and loses on drama. Auttiköngäs is the most striking single destination but demands a car and steady footing on steep ground. Vaattunkiköngäs sits between them: longer, flatter routes along a river, with shelters and campfire sites, and no services at all.
