- Ounasvaara's winter trail starts a short walk across the river from the centre and is groomed, so a couple of hours is enough.
- For half a day
- A half day suits Ounasvaara with time for a campfire at one of the lean-to shelters.
- For a full day
- Auttiköngäs or the Arctic Circle Hiking Area at Vaattunkiköngäs fill a day, including the drive each way.
- Without a car
- Ounasvaara is the only one of these you can reach without a car. The bus stop nearest Vaattunkiköngäs still leaves you a long walk on a gravel road.
- With children
- Ounasvaara's groomed winter trail and short distances from town are the most forgiving with children; the waterfall trail at Auttiköngäs is steep and exposed.
