Allow 6–7 hours from Helsinki. A full-day trip.
Why go
This is the closest place to Helsinki where the landscape stops feeling like a city park. Rocky ridges, small ponds and spruce forest start within minutes of the car park, and the marked trails let you choose how deep in you want to go without route planning.
Best for
- A first real forest day if you are based in Helsinki
- Hikers who want marked trails rather than navigation
- Groups who want a campfire lunch with facilities nearby
Skip if
- You only have two hours in total — travel eats most of it
- You want a flat, even surface underfoot
- You are travelling without a car on a tight schedule
- You want guaranteed food on site
Highlights
- Three colour-marked loops from one trailhead
- Free campfire sites with firewood
- Small swimming lakes on the longer loops
Practical information
Start at the Haukkalampi nature hut for maps and toilets. Trails are rooty and rocky; proper shoes matter. Firewood is provided at maintained campfire sites but campfire bans apply in dry summers.

Getting there Some travel involved
Reachable from Helsinki by public transport with a bus connection and a final walk, but it is slower than driving and services thin out in the evening. Check the current HSL connection before committing to a late return.
The Haukkalampi car park is at Haukkalammentie 32, Espoo, and is the main starting point for the area's marked trails.
Travel times are editorial estimates, not live routing.
Season by season
Late May to early October is the easiest window. Winter works well when the trails are packed, but daylight is short.
- Spring
- Snowmelt leaves the low sections wet and muddy well into May; waterproof footwear matters more than warm clothing.
- Summer
- Long daylight and swimmable ponds. Weekends are the busiest time at the car park.
- Autumn
- The best light and colour of the year, and the ground is usually firm. Bring a headtorch from October.
- Winter
- Quiet and striking when the trails are packed down. Plan around roughly six hours of usable daylight in December.
Effort and terrain
3 h at a normal pace. Forest paths over rock, roots and short steep climbs, with boardwalks across the boggy sections. Nothing is technical, but the ground is uneven for most of the way.

Family and accessibility
- Suitable for children
- Yes
- Stroller friendly
- No
- Step-free access
- Not verified
Works well with children who are used to walking an hour or two. The shortest marked loop plus a campfire lunch is usually enough of a day.
On site
- Food and water
- Café Haukka is at Haukkalampi. Opening times are seasonal, so treat it as a bonus rather than your lunch plan.
- Toilets
- Dry toilets are maintained in the Haukkalampi area.
- Four marked trails start from the Haukkalampi area.
- Maintained campfire sites and cooking shelters are spread around the pond.
- Four tent sites around the pond are open to overnight campers.
- A nature cabin and information boards are at the start point.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip — the rock is slippery when wet
- All your drinking water
- Firewood is provided at maintained sites, but bring matches
- A warm layer: the forest stays cooler than the city
